AMGH is a designated Telestroke site for Southwestern Ontario. Patients exhibiting stroke symptoms present in our ER department and are evaluated to determine if they meet the criteria for treatment with tPA. tPA is used to treat ischemic strokes. An ischemic stroke is caused by a clot that is blocking or obstructing the flow of blood to the brain. tPA dissolves clots however it works best if given within four and a half hours of discovery of stroke symptoms.

Patients who do receive TPA require close monitoring and one to one care by specially trained nurses. The nurses in AMGH ICU are trained to care for our telestroke patient according to Best Practice Guidelines.
